Brendan Rodgers confirms Celtic’s intention to remove players from the wage budget.

Brendan Rodgers understands that there is a lot of deadwood in his team that has to be removed. Several players on his club are just not contributing right now.

Due to this, it is expected that many January departures could be sanctioned. The manager recognises this is part of football and on the whole, that it benefits everyone: “For the players themselves and for their football careers, they need to play”, he said (Daily Mail). “For financial reasons, you can’t be carrying numbers of players each month who aren’t contributing. It then allows us the opportunity to bring players in. That’s just a natural process.”

This month, it seems as though the ‘natural process’ Rodgers speaks of will shine through. It is no secret that the gaffer wants quality in the door but the squad needs to be trimmed first for this to happen.

The likes of Benji Siegrist, Kwon Hyeok-kyu, Yuki Kobayashi, and Gustaf Lagerbielke could all make January departures (Daily Mail) which would be a big boost for the wage budget. It would free up space in the team and allow fresh blood to come in.

Mistakes were undoubtedly made in the past with recruitment – the number of likely January departures putting a testament to this – but now, it is about rectifying them and ensuring similar errors of judgement are not made in the future regarding new signings.
