‘What’s going on?’ – Alan Brazil caught in embarrassing Rangers & Celtic gaffe live on talkSPORT

Alan Brazil was caught in an embarrassing on-air gaffe after mistaking Rangers and Celtic transfer target Scott McKenna for Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Friday (5 January, 07:45am), the host said he had written down in front of him that the Old Firm duo were both interested in the English Championship club’s boss, who he believes is doing an “impressive” job at Portman Road.

But journalist Alex Crook then told him that it’s Nottingham Forest centre-back McKenna that the two Glasgow rivals are interested in signing, adding that the show’s producers must have given him the wrong name.

I’ve got down here, listen Kieran McKenna’s doing a great job at Ipswich and the fans love him, he’s very impressive what he’s doing with the football club, travel to Wimbledon of course in the FA Cup,” said Brazil.

“But I’ve got here Celtic and Rangers are keen on Kieran. I’m not sure I can believe that Crooky, with the greatest respect.

“I think the producers have given you the wrong McKenna, Al,” added Crook. “I gave them Scott McKenna, the Nottingham Forest centre-back.

I’m looking at that thinking, what?” said a puzzled Brazil. “Because Rangers have just got a new manager, Brendan just got a victory in the Old Firm derby. What’s going on?”

Bizarre

It’s completely and utterly bizarre that this kind of error can be made on what claims to be the biggest sports radio station in the world.

While the producers should probably have made sure Brazil knew what he was talking about, you would expect the host to be clued up on all the transfer rumours he’s discussing, particularly in this instance given that he’s a Celtic fan.

It would’ve been very strange for the Old Firm clubs to be interested in the Ipswich boss given that Philippe Clement has had a solid start to life at Ibrox and the Hoops are sitting top of the league under Brendan Rodgers.

But the news they are in for 27-year-old McKenna from Nottingham Forest doesn’t come as a surprise as they are both looking to bolster their defensive ranks during this transfer window.

After the Scotland international’s previous exploits for Aberdeen before

making the switch to the Premier League side in 2020, he would be a superb addition for the Gers in the heart of the defence.
