Gers had £2.5m striker who would have made Old Firm difference but let him slip away: Opinion

Rangers striker deal doesn't make sense as £2m loss hits hard

There were several decisions made in the summer that didn’t make much sense, but Rangers selling Antonio Colak to sign Cyriel Dessers hs to be up there with the wildest. There seems to be no happy medium with the Light Blues number nine, he either contributes to a match winning performance or, like at Parkhead, is largely responsible for us not getting a result.

Rangers didn’t have the answer in Antonio Colak but would any fan or manager Philippe Clement not choose the Croatian striker over Cyriel Dessers?

Rangers made striker mistake in signing Cyriel Dessers

That Michael Beale decided he didn’t want Colak in the squad is one thing but to sign a player who isn’t as good a finisher for more money just doesn’t make sense.

A loss of £2m and a significant number of goals.

Now at Parma, he missed almost half of last season and still finished with 18 goals before being sold for a reported £2.5m.

One thing is certain, Colak wouldn’t have displayed the hesitancy that Dessers did with the scores level at 0-0 against Celtic.

The task facing the Gers boss now is to sign a player with the finishing ability of Antonio Colak but with a more rounded game, links to Lawrence Shankland refuse to go away.

If Cyriel Dessers was consistent, this wouldn’t be an issue but in recent games he has shown an almost amateur level of composure and decisiveness, either shoot or pass but doing nothing with a 20 metre head start is scandalous.

Clement spoke about players like Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland missing similar chances, which is true, but they would at least have made the keeper work.

One thing is certain, Cyriel Dessers hasn’t changed that much as a player since last season which makes the former Rangers manager’s decision to sell Antonio Colak even stranger.

The signing of Fabio Silva is a good start to the January transfer window but if the Scottish Premiership trophy is to return to Ibrox, someone who consistently scores the chances that Dessers has missed recently has to be top of the shopping list.
