Charlton Athletic has shown interest in signing Coventry City forward Matty Godden. While Godden has been a key player for Coventry, there are suggestions, particularly from a Coventry fan pundit, that it might be time for him to explore new opportunities. Despite his contributions, there’s a sense that some chances may have been missed during his tenure at the club.
Reports indicate that Charlton has identified the 32-year-old striker as a top target for their forward positions. Although Godden’s contract with Coventry runs until the end of next season, if he becomes available, several League One clubs are expected to pursue him.
According to Neil Littlewood, a Coventry fan pundit for Football League World, it’s time for Matty Godden to part ways with Coventry City. Littlewood noted that Godden’s demeanor after the final match against Queens Park Rangers in the 2023/24 season suggested that he was bidding farewell to the club. Littlewood mentioned that internal sources indicate Godden has already come to terms with leaving.
While acknowledging Godden’s significant contributions to Coventry, especially with his crucial goals, Littlewood observed that this season has seen him drop in the pecking order behind players like Ellis Simms and Haji Wright. Despite being a great servant to the club, the pundit believes it’s in Godden’s best interest to seek new opportunities elsewhere.
“He showed against Oxford United in the FA Cup, with two great finishes, that he is still a good goalscorer. Given the chance, I think that he will do that for a League One club.
“I think Charlton would be a great move. I know that he still lives in Kent, so it’s fairly local to him.
“Best of luck to him if he does go as well. I wouldn’t mind if the club let him go on a free as a thank you just to get him playing football. And, wherever he goes, I’ll be sure to keep an eye on what he’s doing because, like I said, he’s been a fantastic servant to the club.
