  •  Charlton are interested in signing Matty Godden from Coventry City.
  •  Despite his contributions to Coventry, the FLW Coventry fan pundit suggests that it might be time for Godden to pursue a new chapter.
  •  While Godden has been a key player for Coventry, there’s a lingering question of missed opportunities during his time with the club.

According to reports, Charlton Athletic is interested in signing Coventry City attacker Matty Godden.

According to the South London Press, Charlton Football Club has prioritised the 32-year-old striker on its wanted strikers list.

According to Richard Cawley, a journalist with the outlet, Godden’s contract with the Sky Blues expires at the conclusion of next season. If he becomes available, many third-tier clubs will be interested in signing him.

King believes Mark Robins will have the best squad at his disposal when the summer transfer window ends.

Football League World’s Coventry fan pundit, Neil Littlewood, believes it’s time for the forward to leave the Sky Blues.

Matty Godden was a wonderful Coventry servant.

According to a FLW City supporter, the 32-year-old’s reaction after the last whistle against Queens Park Rangers on the last day of the 2023/24 season suggests his time with the club is over.

“Godden is gone,” remarked Littlewood.”I believe his body language after the final game against QPR indicated he was saying goodbye. The clamour you hear within the club indicates that he has long accepted the idea that he is leaving.

“It’s a shame because, without his goals, I don’t believe we would have made it out of League One. He’s been a fantastic servant to the club, but I believe this season has shown that he has fallen down the pecking order, trailing the likes of Ellis Simms and Haji Wright.

Ellis Simms Haji Wright

“He demonstrated his ability to score goals against Oxford United in the FA Cup, with two superb finishes. Given the chance, I believe he will do so for a League One club.

“I believe Charlton would be an excellent move. I know he still lives in Kent, so it’s rather close to him.

“Good luck to him if he decides to go as well. I wouldn’t mind if the club let him go for free as a thank you for getting him into football. And, wherever he goes, I’ll make sure to keep an eye on what he’s doing because, as I previously stated, he’s been a tremendous servant to the club.

“He’s scored some really vital goals at critical times, and we’d have battled to get out of the third tier without him. He did an excellent job keeping us in the Championship and scored some vital goals alongside Viktor Gyokeres last season.

“It’ll be sad to see him go, but I think the time is right.”

Matty Godden’s Coventry career may have produced much more.

The Sky Blues purchased the striker for £750,000 from Peterborough United in 2018. According to FLW’s Coventry commentator, he has made significant contributions to the club’s current success.

However, if he goes this summer, he may feel regret or a sense of squandered opportunity.

Last season’s Wembley agony in the play-off final against Luton Town was followed by more penalties defeat at the home of English football against Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final.

City missed out on the play-offs completely this season after their form deteriorated in the closing stages of the season.

There will be fond memories upon his departure, whenever that is, but there could be a sense of what could have been for him too.
