He’s had a difficult season.
With Celtic, the leaders and Old Firm rivals, now holding the potential to win the Scottish Premiership, Rangers may need to make some tough choices this summer, including the potential departure of a specific defender.
News about Rangers transfers
As things stand, the Gers will be saying goodbye to a number of players this summer when their contracts expire, including Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic, Jon McLaughlin, and Leon Balogun, who will all be leaving Ibrox at the end of the current campaign. John Lundstram, whose current contract is about to expire and negotiations are underway for a new one, is one player who might avoid that fate.
Rangers will, however, have space to improve after those departures. Oscar Cortes and Fabio Silva have already been linked to long-term moves, and Eduard Spertsyan has also been mentioned in three moves that would strengthen Philippe Clement’s front line this summer. Additionally, while attacking newcomers may arrive at Ibrox this summer, Ben Davies and other players who are having difficulty breaking into Clement’s current squad may be sold to finance their arrival.
After a disappointing season, the former Liverpool defender, now known as the “forgotten” Davies, may be traded to Rangers this summer, according to journalist Chris Jack.
“It’s been a long time since he’s been on the pitch and [he’s] just become one of the forgotten guys,” Jack said to Rangers Review, as reported by Ibrox News. It’s safe to say, in my opinion, that the manager doesn’t think highly of him or see a place for him.
“During the January window, there was a lot of discussion about Davies possibly moving on. It appears that the manager will most likely try to move him in the summer. I don’t see how he has a long-term future if he can’t even make the matchday squad right now.
Ben Davies’s ongoing difficulties
Since making an unexpected transfer from Preston North End to Liverpool in January 2021, Davies has, in reality, had difficulties. The central defender eventually completed a loan move to Sheffield United after failing to ever factor into Jurgen Klopp’s plans amid a defensive crisis at Anfield. This allowed him to finally escape his nightmare at Anfield by signing a permanent deal with Rangers.
Before he embarks on his first full season as Rangers’ manager, it appears that Clement won’t have time for sentimentality as the transfer window draws near.
