In the lead-up to their FA Cup semifinal matchup with Coventry City, Gary Neville has refuted the notion that injuries have “decimated” Manchester United.

When the Red Devils play the Sky Blues at Wembley on April 21, they might be missing six defenders. Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez are unquestionably out, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are serious doubts, and both Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans were hurt in United’s Premier League loss to Chelsea last week.

They had just four defenders left—Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Willy Kambwala—for their Premier League matchup with Liverpool on Sunday. Neville nevertheless thinks Erik ten Hag has a capable group at his disposal.

“I actually think nine of the team that start today would be his first choice,” he said in an interview prior to their Sky Sports matchup against Liverpool. Shaw would likely start at left back while Martinez would start at left center back, in my opinion.

“You can debate between Harry Maguire and Varane, but there isn’t much to it, and for the other players, I believe he has his best players available. The notion that injuries have destroyed Manchester United is not one I subscribe to.

“They have terrible injuries in one particular position, so young Kwambala fills in. They’re not too bad, other than that. I believe that Wan-Bissaka and Dalot have been important additions to the team in the last five or six years as full-backs, so I don’t think Manchester United is doing too badly with the young center back.
