Tottenham Hotspur’s resurgence since the dismal 2022/23 season has been nothing short of remarkable. Daniel Levy’s savvy signings have injected new life and promise into the club.

James Maddison’s creative prowess, Micky van de Ven’s defensive solidity, Brennan Johnson’s dynamic wing play, and Guglielmo Vicario’s goalkeeping prowess have all contributed significantly.

However, it’s the arrival of Ange Postecoglou that has truly revolutionized Spurs. His tactical acumen has reignited the team’s synergy and style, propelling them back into Champions League contention.

Under Postecoglou, Spurs play an exciting brand of football, exemplified by the successful addition of Timo Werner in January. This transformation marks a new era of potential and ambition at Tottenham Hotspur.

Why Spurs signed Timo Werner

In January, Tottenham secured the loan signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig for the remainder of the season. This move was orchestrated by Postecoglou to strengthen the team’s attacking options, with a purchase option of £15 million included in the agreement.

In his ten Premier League appearances for Tottenham, Timo Werner has made a notable impact with two goals and three assists, earning praise for his lightning-fast pace, as noted by pundit Paul Merson.

Often deployed on the left wing, Werner brings a different dynamic compared to Richarlison and Heung-min Son, using his speed to stretch defenses and deliver dangerous crosses into the box.

While there may be uncertainties about his long-term future at Tottenham given his high wages, Werner has proven himself as a valuable asset under Postecoglou’s management.

Similar to Celtic’s Daizen Maeda under Postecoglou’s guidance, Werner is a persistent threat on the field, causing problems for opponents and contributing to Tottenham’s attacking fluidity and success.

Ange’s next Daizen Maeda

Described as a “workhorse” by journalist Josh Bunting, Maeda has been a key component of the Hoops’ success after signing on an initial loan from Yokohama F. Marinos in January 2022, bringing pace and energy down the flanks.

Despite not being the most prolific scorer, Timo Werner has earned praise as an “absolute nuisance” for defenders, according to pundit Rio Ferdinand. He has contributed 27 goals and 15 assists in 102 appearances, showcasing qualities that go beyond just his stats.

Described as a “livewire” by Ferdinand, Werner’s electric pace, intelligent movement, and skillful dribbling have led to 47 goals and assists in 121 games under Postecoglou, including their time together in Yokohama.

While criticized at times for being a “headless chicken” due to occasional profligacy in front of goal, evidenced by his 11 big chances missed in the Premiership this season, Maeda remains effective in Postecoglou’s system.

Similarly, Werner has shown wastefulness with four big chances missed in the league at Tottenham. However, his ability to trouble defenses aligns well with Postecoglou’s style, making him a player the Australian tactician may want to keep beyond this season.

He’s a snappy, effective player and while he will never have the shooting boots of Son, Werner clearly fits a mould that Postecoglou seeks from his wingers and Tottenham would be wise to activate his buy option.

Like Maeda, he may have his moments that will have supporters tearing their hair out, yet his willing work ethic and direct nature – as evidenced in his assist for Johnson at the London Stadium last time out – could make the German a firm fan favourite at N17.
