The tragic incident at the Co Donegal petrol station resulted in the loss of several lives, including Martin McGill, a dedicated Scots Celtic fan from Kirkintilloch. Known fondly as ‘Scotch Martin,’ he had moved to Creeslough to care for his parents before the explosion claimed his life. Following the blast in October 2022, which also took the lives of nine others, including Robert Garwe and his daughter Shauna Flanagan-Garwe, Catherine O’Donnell and her son James Monaghan, Jessica Gallagher, James O’Flaherty, Martina Martin, Hugh ‘Hughie’ Kelly, and Leona Harper, an investigation was initiated. Recently, two individuals in their 50s were apprehended in connection with the incident on suspected offenses under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997. The investigation, led by the Gardaí from Milford Gardaí station with support from various agencies, remains ongoing. During Martin McGill’s funeral, attendees honored his compassion, kindness, and commitment to caring for others. The service featured poignant moments, including a lone piper leading Martin’s casket and a Celtic jersey placed as a tribute to his passion for the team. In response to the tragedy, Celtic FC demonstrated solidarity by contributing £10,000 to a support fund for the victims of the Creeslough explosion. Players also wore black armbands as a mark of respect for those who perished, reflecting the widespread grief and support within the community during this challenging period.
