Rangers’ loss to Benifca, one star gets slandered by the Portuguese media

The Portuguese media has attacked Rangers player John Lundstram for his play in the midfield during the Light Blues’ disastrous Europa League elimination against Benfica.

On Thursday, March 14, at Ibrox, Philippe Clement’s team fell short 1-0 against the Portuguese powerhouses, ultimately losing 3-2 overall. Rafa Silva’s goal in the second half separated the two teams that evening in Glasgow.

The Portuguese media has not wasted any time in criticizing Lundstram and his colleagues for their lackluster attacking performance on Thursday night, despite the fact that the loss and the way it was handled inside Ibrox disappointed the supporters.

Portuguese publication Abola (March 14) stated that Benfica goalkeeper Anatolli Turbin kept an easy clean sheet against Clement’s team despite the Englishman’s “weak” shot late in the second half.

The 30-year-old received a 5/10 rating from O Jogo (15 March, pages 6 and 7) as well as criticism for giving the opposition control late in the second half, which allowed Angel Di Maria to deliver a hazardous ball into the penalty area.

Will John Lundstram sign a new deal with the Rangers or finish his transfer?
Although there is a consensus among Rangers supporters that Lundstram should be given a new contract in order to continue at Ibrox past the end of the current campaign, his performance against Benfica revealed he isn’t the ideal midfield player.

The 30-year-old managed the game from the Light Blues’ standpoint even if he failed to convert his late opportunity to help send the match into extra time. He completed more passes than any player on the opposing team.
