Coventry City completed a late winter deal for Peterborough United forward Ephron Mason-Clark in January, only for him to be loaned straight back to London Road.

Coventry City confirmed the move for Mason-Clark late on deadline day. It was announced as an undisclosed fee with the 24-year-old spending the remainder of the season with Peterborough United.

Reports later confirmed details of the deal, with the transfer fee coming in at £4.25m after Posh agreed to lower the sum so they could keep their star forward for the rest of the campaign. The deal is a pricey one for a League One player, but Mason-Clark has all the makings of an instant star in Sky Blue.

Having Mason-Clark for the second half of the Championship season would have been a welcoming for Coventry City. He’s a talented and dangerous attacker who already looks ready for the step up to the second-tier.

At times, he’s looked a level above the opposition for Peterborough United. Often deployed on the left but capable of playing anywhere across the front three, Mason-Clark has notched a stunning 18 goals and 11 assists in 44 games across all competitions this season, and there’s still plenty of time for him to add to that tally.

The sheer pace he possesses will make him a handful at any level but he’s got the attacking instincts and ability on the ball to boot. At 24, he’ll only get better and better, but he’s good enough to have an instant impact for Mark Robins when he officially links up with his new club in the summer.

Of course, as is the case with any new signing, he’ll have to settle in and ultimately prove to Robins that he’s capable of holding down a starting spot. There’s no doubt he has the ability to do just that, and the £4.25m outlay for his signature suggests Coventry City firmly believe that to be the case as well.

Ending his time at Peterborough United on a high will be the priority for Mason-Clark. His 28 goals and 21 assists in 90 games has made him a popular figure with the Posh.

They’re right in the fight for promotion, sitting 5th in the League One table. They’ve won four in a row and boast at least one game in hand on all teams above them with seven points separating Darren Ferguson’s side and automatic promotion.

Mason-Clark will be determined to inspire Posh to a memorable promotion as he bids farewell. Regardless of how the season ends though, he has all the makings of an instant star for Coventry City.
