After a 1-1 draw away from home against play-off opponents Hull City on Saturday, West Bromwich Albion is still in fifth place and is getting closer to earning a play-off spot at the conclusion of the season.

One of the top teams in the Championship this year is Carlos Corberan’s Baggies, who have achieved several impressive victories, including a 3-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on February 20.

Corberan and company strengthened their roster during the previous transfer window, bringing in Celtic player Mikey Johnston and Bristol City forward Andi Weimann on loan.

Both of these players have already made an impression at the Hawthorns. Weimann scored twice in two victories over Cardiff City (10 days apart) and a 1-0 victory over Birmingham City (3 February). Johnston has also scored twice in his two games as an Albion player.

Before scoring the second goal in the Baggies’ 3-0 South West victory over Plymouth, the wide player had already registered a point against the Bluebirds.

Johnston has so far made an impression at the Baggies.

The Ireland international has only been named in Corberan’s starting 11 three times since joining Albion on February 1st, but he has already scored twice in six appearances.

After being added to the action just five minutes earlier, he scored during the Baggies’ triumph at Home Park in the 76th minute, demonstrating his ability to have an influence on games in a short amount of time.

The ace also demonstrated how quickly he can impact a game by scoring in the first minute of Albion’s 2-0 triumph over the Bluebirds.

Considering that Johnston has only been playing English football since the beginning of the month, it is especially amazing how skilled he is at getting off to a fast start.

All three of the parties concerned would benefit from a permanent deal for Johnston.

Despite only having made six appearances thus far, the 24-year-old has already established himself as a valuable asset for the Baggies and is obviously enjoying playing for Corberan.

Even though Johnston has only made three fewer appearances for Albion this season than he did for Celtic over the course of the first half of the current Scottish Premiership season, his clinical nature is evident as he scored two goals in the nine appearances and three starts he was given in Glasgow.

The star player has never seen a lot of playing time at Celtic Park and played on loan at Portuguese team Vitoria de Guimaraes during the 2022–2023 season.

But it is a testament to his high regard at his new club that he was included in the starting lineup for the crucial matchup with Hull, another team vying for a spot in the top six.

Johnston, who is now 24 years old, should undoubtedly leave his parent club in the summer in order to pursue greater career security and playing time.

Given the good contributions the wide player has already made to the team in his brief tenure, Albion would undoubtedly love to retain him on a permanent basis regardless of whether they get promoted.

In the meanwhile, Celtic might want to cash in on Johnston and let him depart the team permanently, as they haven’t been able to offer their man much playing time over the years.
