Phil Parkinson, the manager of Wrexham AFC, says the setback against Tranmere is not a season-defining one

Wrexham still has enough to play for, according to Phil Parkinson, who maintains that the loss to Tranmere Rovers is not a season-ending setback.

The Reds’ chances of making it up to League Two were further hampered by their 1-0 loss to Tranmere Rovers, a cross-border foe, at The Racecourse.

Rovers jumped out to an early lead, but even with the bulk of the ball, Wrexham was unable to generate clear-cut opportunities and lacked a cutting edge in the latter third.

The Reds’ goalless draw with Harrogate Town on Tuesday was their second straight home encounter in which they failed to score.

Wrexham remain third in the table but are now five points behind leaders Mansfield Town. With two games remaining, second-place Stockport County and the Reds have the same number of points, although fourth-place MK Dons have played one extra game than the Reds.

Parkinson claims that Wrexham is still in a strong position to finish in the top three, with eight games left in their quest for a second straight promotion.

The manager of the Reds stated, “We have to think about this.”

“There is a ton of value at stake. This isn’t a defining defeat although it was a local derby and we know what it means not only to our supporters but players and staff as well.

“But it’s not a loss that defines the season.

“We are in a strong position and we have got to dust ourselves down, and get ready to go again at Grimsby next week.”

Tempers frayed following the final whistle and a melee involving players from both teams ensued but Parkinson didn’t witness anything.

He said, “I had gone down the tunnel.”

“I wasn’t really aware of it until someone brought it up to me.

“I don’t know whether the referee had gone down the tunnel as well at the time.

“It is something you don’t want to happen but emotions were running high.”
