Hammers Project: director of football Steidten departs to Brazil player mission

Claret & Hugh have learned that West Ham’s director of football, Tim Steidten, went on a scouting trip to Brazil by plane.

Steidten is staying at West Ham as part of a long-term project, as was previously disclosed, and his only goal is to help the Hammers’ team. Tim has flown out to Brazil to watch four games, the club’s top source revealed in an interview with C&H this morning.
Over the past 12 months, West Ham has been establishing connections in Brazil; Rob Newman began the initial work, which is now being overseen by Steidten.
Brazil offers good value for money, making it a good market to invest in. There are hidden gems to be found if a club buys directly from Brazil because South American players instantly become highly valuable once they sign with a European team.

As the director of recruitment at Bayer Leverkusen under Simon Rolfes, Steidten will have a keen understanding of the caliber of candidates in South America. Along with Brazilians and Colombians, Piero Hincapie and Exequiel Palacios are two of Xabi Alonso’s most valuable players.

It’s not a bad thing if the Hammers are adopting the Leverkusen model.

Hopefully, there is a succession plan and Tim Steiden has already identified one or two replacements. The Irons need a massive rebuild during the summer, with wingers, forwards, midfielders, and defenders required. However, with Financial Fair Play being ever more strictly enforced, West Ham will need to find bargains in some positions to bulk out the squad.

Anyone know what Pablo Zabaleta is doing these days?
