‘Absolutely Mental’ – Ally McCoist puzzled by West Ham player controversy live on talkSPORT

Ally McCoist said that Newcastle United’s late penalty against West Ham United was “absolutely mental” and shouldn’t have been awarded.

David Moyes West Ham United

On Saturday, March 30, at St. James’ Park, David Moyes’ team gave up a two-goal lead and lost 4-3. Alexander Isak scored twice from the penalty spot to put more pressure on Moyes and Kalvin Phillips.

Nevertheless, McCoist is perplexed by the choice to penalize players for leaping in front of opponents and doesn’t think Phillips fouled Anthony Gordon for the Magpies’ second spot-kick.

On Tuesday, April 2, he made the following statement on talkSPORT: “Can I just shove my 10-pence worth in? I didn’t realize it was a punishment. To be clear, I don’t believe there is ever a penalty for that.

“Actually, when a player places their foot where another player is about to place their foot, they are awarding free kicks. To God be trumped! It’s psychological. It’s completely insane.

Will West Ham United defeat Tottenham and resume their winning ways?
With good reason, there has been a great deal of controversy surrounding West Ham’s loss to the Magpies. It seems that there is still no consensus in the football world regarding whether or not the home team should have been given a penalty.

Furthermore, some Newcastle supporters contend that Mohammed Kudus’ goal in the first half should not have counted because the Hammers’ swift free-kick came while Fabian Schar was still down with a head injury.

But as the final stretch of the season approaches, the games are coming thick and fast. Moyes’ team needs to concentrate on beating Tottenham and rekindling their hopes of playing in Europe again.

Even though Ange Postecoglou’s team will be difficult to defeat, this local derby at London Stadium almost seems like a must-win for some. Hopefully, the fight won’t be overshadowed by any more controversy.
