West Brom ‘lock in’ controversial £2m transfer decision with Carlos Corberan promise at stake

West Bromwich Albion is reportedly considering a surprising move to fulfill a promise made to Carlos Corberan this summer. The club, seeking funds for the upcoming transfer window, is rumored to be putting up dependable right-back Darnell Furlong for sale.

Despite their efforts, West Brom failed to secure promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs, missing out on the financial boost that comes with top-flight football. Their spending has been restricted in recent windows, even after the takeover by Florida businessman Shilen Patel. Patel inherited around £20 million in loans from the previous ownership, which has limited the club’s financial flexibility.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, the decision has been made to sell Furlong due to the challenging financial situation. This move is aimed at fulfilling a promise made to Corberan, ensuring he has the opportunity to shape the squad according to his vision.

Furlong’s contract has only 12 months remaining, making this summer the last chance for West Brom to secure a significant transfer fee for him. The club is reportedly open to offers around £2 million, a figure that could attract interest from several Premier League clubs.

However, there’s a conflicting report suggesting that Furlong might not be as close to leaving as initially thought. The Express & Star, affiliated with Birmingham World, indicates that while West Brom plans to generate funds through sales, they will only part ways with players Corberan is willing to let go.

Contrasting reports have emerged regarding West Brom right-back Darnell Furlong.
Contrasting reports have emerged regarding West Brom right-back Darnell Furlong.

It’s very unlikely Furlong would be one of those as the 28-year-old featured in all 46 of West Brom’s Championship games last term, scoring five and assisting three. The defender, known for his long throws, has played over 200 times for Albion, making him well worth the £1.3 million fee paid to Queens Park Rangers in 2019.
