A West Bromwich Albion player and the son of a Baggies legend are part of the Wales under-21 national team alongside Zac Ashworth, who is currently on loan with Bolton Wanderers.
West Brom defender Alex Williams has earned his debut call-up to the Wales under-21 squad. Williams is among three new faces in the squad. The team managed by Matthew Jones will play a UEFA EURO Under-21 qualifier against Lithuania, followed by a friendly against Morocco in Turkey.
At 19 years old, Williams has progressed from his under-19 debut last season, amassing four caps. Although he hasn’t made his senior debut for West Brom, he has been a key player in their under-21 squad, featuring in 13 Premier League 2 matches.
Williams is contracted until the summer of 2025 after signing a two-and-a-half-year deal in January 2023. Described by the club as an “enthusiastic defender with confidence, energy, and excellent crossing ability,” Williams hails from Warwick but captains Wales’ age-grade teams.
Joining him in the Wales under-21 squad is Zac Ashworth, currently on loan at Bolton Wanderers. Ashworth has made 22 appearances for Bolton this season but has been absent from the last five matches.
Another familiar name for West Brom fans in the Wales under-21 squad is Koumas. Lewis Koumas, son of former Baggies player Jason Koumas (2002-2007), has made an impact with Liverpool this season, debuting in the FA Cup at the end of February.
Born in Chester, Lewis qualifies for Wales through his father, who was born in Wrexham, and also has eligibility to play for Cyprus through his paternal grandfather. Wales expects Jason Koumas to opt for their national team over England, having already represented Wales at the under-19 level.
