Former West Bromwich Albion striker Kevin Campbell is in hospital having fallen ill this week. Campbell arrived at The Hawthorns in January 2005 and made a significant impact in the club’s Great Escape from relegation under Bryan Robson. The target man scored important goals against Manchester City, Birmingham City and Crystal Palace after arriving and his leadership qualities provided Albion with an enormous helping hand.
Campbell, scored three more goals – including in wins over Man City and Blackburn Rovers – the following season as the Baggies did bow out of the Premier League before he ended his decorated career – for which he is most notably remembered for spells with Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Everton – with a swift spell at Championship side Cardiff City.
The 54-year-old, whose son Tyrese has most recently ended an eight-year spell with Stoke City, fell ill recently, reports the Liverpool ECHO, and he remains in hospital.
One Albion fan posted on X: “Once again, thoughts and best wishes go out to ex Albion man Kevin Campbell and his family. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.” Another supporter said: “Wishing @1kevincampbell a very speedy recovery. Loved him at @WBA we would never have pulled off the great escape without him.”
Another posted: “Wishing all the best to our former West Bromwich Albion captain Kevin Campbell. Played a huge part in our Great Escape…” One more supporter said: “Sad to hear that #KevinCampbell is seriously ill in hospital. A lot of love for him at @WBA.”
