Tragic Loss for Music World: Supertramp’s Rick Davies Passes Away at 81
April 19, 2025 — The music world is in mourning following the death of Rick Davies, co-founder and longtime keyboardist/vocalist of the legendary rock band Supertramp. Davies passed away peacefully at his home in Kent, England, on Friday night at the age of 81. The cause of death has been reported as complications arising from a rare neurological condition that Davies had been privately battling for the past several years.
Rick Davies was the backbone of Supertramp, known for his deep voice, jazz-inspired keyboard work, and signature songwriting style. Alongside Roger Hodgson, he helped create a catalog of timeless hits, including “Goodbye Stranger,” “Bloody Well Right,” “Rudy,” and “From Now On.” The band rose to global fame in the 1970s with the landmark album Breakfast in America, which sold over 20 million copies worldwide.
The announcement comes just weeks after Supertramp had begun planning a long-awaited reunion tour. Fans were thrilled at the possibility of seeing Davies and saxophonist John Helliwell share the stage once again. Sadly, the tour was postponed indefinitely earlier this month due to unspecified “health concerns,” now known to be related to Davies’ condition.
Tributes have poured in from musicians, fans, and former bandmates. Roger Hodgson wrote, “Rick’s music was a light for so many. Though we had our differences, I always respected his immense talent and spirit.”
Rick Davies leaves behind a lasting legacy—one of musical excellence, quiet leadership, and emotional resonance. He is survived by his wife, Sue, who managed the band for years, and a devoted global fanbase who will never forget his contribution to the soundtrack of their lives.
A private funeral will be held, with a public memorial concert expected later
this year.
