Leeds’s performance in the Championship

Under Daniel Farke, the Whites have been dominant in the Championship, winning all five of their league games in 2024 and giving up only one goal in that span.

The most recent victory in the second tier occurred at Bristol City on Friday night, where Wilfried Gnonto scored the game’s lone goal in the second half. Following the game, Farke gave Gnonto praise and remarked, “I was hoping it would be like this.” I’m thrilled and content for him. He has been working hard there for the past few weeks. I’m thrilled that he’s there with a vital goal since there was a goal or an assist lacking.”

Leeds is presently one point behind Southampton in second place in the league rankings, who have a game in hand, and ahead of Ipswich Town. Apart from the field, the Whites have also been quietly extending the contracts of two highly-regarded young players, Mateo Joseph and Archie Gray, and Gnonto might be the next to sign a new agreement.

Update on Wilfried Gnonto’s contract

Last month, Phil Hay provided an update on Gnonto’s future, stating that the team was trying to reach a deal with the forward and that a new contract was rumored to be near.

Sky Sports contributor Robinson responded to that update by calling it a “very positive indication coming from the team.” The analyst stated, “It’s a really good sign coming out of the club,” in an interview with MOT Leeds News. Retaining players who aren’t contributing is extremely difficult, and Willy Gnonto hasn’t started every game this year.

“At best, he has been a bit-part player who has started a few games and come in and out of the squad. However, that is what strong teams and large squads accomplish.

“You compare it to the way Manchester City rotates their squad in the Premier League.” Players understand and accept that they may not start every game in a good, deep squad that is involved in many games.

“If the rumour that he’s going to sign a new contract is accurate, then his relationship with the new manager must be good.”

Gnonto appears to be settling in under Farke, seizing the chance after colleague Dan James was hurt last month.

After the drama surrounding his transfer request in the summer, which prevented him from playing in several games, Farke seems to be gradually getting the best performance out of the Italy international, which could be useful in the final stretch. He was the match-winner in the Championship last time out on just his second league start since October.
