Swansea City set sights on relegated goalkeeper, reporter claims

Swansea City are interested in offering Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Lee Nicholls a route back to the Championship, as per reporter Alan Nixon.

Swansea City are gearing up for another season of Championship football after comfortably staving off relegation under the lead of Luke Williams.

There were some nervous times for the Swans as they struggled through large periods but a strong end to the campaign saw them end 14th, a comfortable seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Nevertheless, they won’t be resting on their laurels and manager Williams will be keen to make an impact on the playing squad in his first summer transfer window in charge in South Wales.

A goalkeeper is sure to be on the shopping list and as per reporter Alan Nixon, one man on the Swansea City transfer radar is Huddersfield Town man Lee Nicholls.

Writing on his Patreon, Nixon states that the Swans are ‘heading the queue’ to sign the relegated shot-stopper, though their offer is expected to be ‘a fair bit’ below the decent fee the Terriers are asking for.

A Championship return?

Huddersfield Town will likely see some of their key players move back to the Championship following relegation and it would not be all that surprising if Nicholls was among them.

The goalkeeper has been a reliable presence in between the sticks since joining in the summer of 2021, managing 35 clean sheets in 115 games for the club.

Looking at his contract situation though, it’s not a surprise to see that it could take a decent offer to take Nicholls back to the Championship. He has two years left on his existing deal and a 12-month extension option on top of that, so Huddersfield are in a strong position to keep him.

Time will tell just what Nicholls’ stance on the matter is though, with Swansea City among those keen.

Starting spot up for grabs

Swansea City will need a new no. 1 this summer following the end of Carl Rushworth’s impressive loan.

Andy Fisher and Nathan Broome remain on the books but it seems highly likely that a starting ‘keeper will be coming in. Pre-season may give Fisher a shot if another option isn’t signed first, but the goalkeeper who comes in will be the favourite to start for Williams next season.

As Nixon notes in his report, a Rushworth reunion was their top choice, but he could get a Premier League chance with Ipswich Town next season in a new loan from Brighton.

Nicholls could be a good target for Swansea City but the club are sure to keep their options open in their hunt for the next no. 1.
