Sheffield Wednesday star tipped to leave

One Sheffield Wednesday player could be leaving the club this summer, just a year after signing on a permanent basis.

Sheffield Wednesday plans to make several summer transfers, including players out of contract at Hillsborough.

Danny Rohl and owner Dejphon Chansiri hope to make long-term changes at the club this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday is reportedly improving their training facilities after positive talks between Chansiri and Rohl about Rohl’s future with the club.

But there will still be a lot of players leaving this summer. Reece James, a defender, is also expected to leave the club before next season.

The 30-year-old re-signed on a permanent basis last summer after helping the Owls earn promotion from League One, but has only made eight appearances in the Championship.

And, given his lack of playing time since Rohl’s arrival, James is now ‘expected’ to leave S6 this summer, with Crann adding that there is a lot of interest in the former Doncaster Rovers player.

Crann posted:

Danny Rohl needs to be careful about one thing at Sheffield Wednesday.

James is a popular player among Sheffield Wednesday fans. He demonstrated his abilities during the League One promotion season, and it’s surprising that he’s been overlooked by Rohl since his arrival in October.

However, Rohl prefers to play with a back-five, and James simply does not fit into that system. He’s more of a standard left-back in a back-four, a formation Rohl rarely uses.

So it makes sense that James would leave this summer. However, for Rohl, the left-back position is already very thin, with James possibly the only natural left-back at the club, as Marvin Johnson is more of a wing-back.

So, letting James go could leave that position very open, and the club will need to ensure that they can bring in new players before the start of the 2024/25 season.

James’ departure could be imminent, with interest in the defender indicating that a Championship or League One move is the most likely next step for the Englishman.

After a difficult season, he’ll be eager to play some regular football next season, and he’ll leave as a well-known figure among Sheffield Wednesday fans.
