Sheffield Wednesday look set to face huge competition to sign Ian Poveda permanently.
Ian Poveda has struggled during his various stints throughout his career, and it wasn’t until he joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan that he seemed to rediscover his potential.
The Owls never really got the opportunity to get the best out of him though, with the Colombian only managing ten appearances due to injuries.
With Poveda’s contract at Leeds United up this summer, Wednesday were eager to bring him back to the club on a permanent basis.
However, it is bad news for Danny Rohl’s side, who could face competition for the likes of Burnley, Luton Town and Sunderland.
While there is no transfer fee involved for the free agent, wages and the pull of a promotion challenge could well tempt him to go elsewhere.
It is not the end of the world for Wednesday though, who could instead look to League One to bolster their attack.
Peterborough United were desperate to win promotion this season, before finishing fourth and narrowly losing to Oxford United in the play-off semi-finals.
Posh face competition to keep hold of Kwame Poku
Posh now face another campaign in the third tier and the Owls could use that to their advantage, offering one of their prized assets a pathway to the Championship.
Kwame Poku has attracted plenty of interest due to his form for Posh this term, with the likes of West Brom, Stoke City and Bristol City all recently linked.
The 22-year-old has been vital to Peterborough over the past couple of seasons and has netted 16 goals and provided 15 assists in the process – 18 of which came this season.
Poku just has one year left on his deal, therefore Posh could aim to profit from his exit this summer rather than letting him go for free in a year.
Could the Peterborough United winger compare to Ian Poveda?
The ‘outstanding’ attacker has the most successful dribbles in League One (52) and the eighth-most shots (97).
He may be the type of difficult winger Wednesday needs if they miss out on Poveda, although he would cost far more than the former Owls loanee.
Poku is expected to leave Posh for roughly £1.5 million this summer, however this may decrease due to the team’s failure to achieve promotion.
Wednesday will be a more appealing option if Danny Rohl commits to the club, and pursuing Poku may be more successful if Dejphon Chansiri is willing to invest.
The former Colchester United player will also be in high demand, but a transfer to Hillsborough might open up a lot of alternatives for the Owls.
