George Pickens runs a pattern Friday at Steelers’ rookie minicamp

The Steelers signed the first of their seven draft picks this year to a contract, giving second-round wide receiver George Pickens a 4-year deal.

Terms were not immediately known, but Pickens’ deal was estimated to be worth $6.752 million after the Steelers used the 52nd pick in the draft on the former Georgia star.

The deal was made immediately after the Steelers finished up their first practice of their rookie minicamp at the UPMC-Rooney Sports Complex Friday.

Pickens finished his career with 90 receptions for 1,347 yards and 14 touchdowns, though he missed most of the 2021 season with a torn ACL suffered in the spring. He returned late in the season for Georgia, helping the Bulldogs win the national title while catching five passes for 107 yards.

He’s expected to help the Steelers offset the losses of JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Washington and Ray-Ray McCloud to free agency in the offseason.

Pickens showed no ill effects of the knee injury during the minicamp on Friday, working through all of the positional drills.

Though he’s right around a year removed from the torn ACL, he said he’s ready to work on a daily basis with his new team as he acclimates himself to the NFL.

“I’m just doing what I’ve been doing my whole career, just putting my head down and working,” Pickens said Friday. “That’s what’s going to put me in the best position to succeed.”
