On Saturday, Jarrod Bowen scored his 16th goal in the Premier League and his 20th goal overall in all competitions this season at home against Liverpool. In doing so, Bowen tied the record for the most Premier League goals scored by West Ham in a season set by Hammers legend Paolo Di Canio on his 200th appearance for the team.
Before the half, Mohammed Kudus’ cross was met with a lovely header from Bowen, giving West Ham the advantage over Liverpool. The Hammers behind twice in the second half, with goals from Andy Robertson and an own goal from Alphonse Areola putting them under pressure.
In order to preserve a point for the Hammers in the 77th minute, Michail Antonio headed Bowen’s pin-point cross home, marking his 30th goal contribution of the year. The England international Bowen has had an incredible season, and on his 200th appearance in a West Ham shirt, he tied Di Canio’s Premier League goal scoring record.
“I’m probably more disappointed that I have missed the last couple of weeks where I would have had chances to score even more,” Bowen said to the team’s official website following the game. “But I loved every minute of being back out there and scoring is a great return.”
Bowen knows that a strong finish to the season will increase his chances of being selected, and he has his sights set on a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad: “I need to have a big finish to the season with what is happening in the summer.” I can only attempt to perform at my highest level each week. I wanted to do it today, I wanted to do it against Luton before we finished at Manchester City, and I wanted to do it again at Chelsea the following weekend.
“It’s three really big games for us that we can control our own season and destiny with, and with the standards here, we have to win all those games to qualify for Europe,” Bowen said, highlighting the fact that West Ham is still vying for their fourth consecutive year of European football and that the team knows results in each of the final three games are necessary to achieve this goal.
