Lincoln City, Stevenage Fc, Blackpool, Mansfield Town among clubs eyeing hot striker swoop

Lincoln City, Blackpool, Mansfield Town, Barnsley and Stevenage are all interested in Northampton Town’s Louis Appere, as per reporter Graeme Bailey.

Lincoln City, Blackpool, Mansfield Town, Barnsley, and Stevenage will all be playing League One football next season.

While the Imps, the Tangerines, the Tykes, and Boro all came up short in their respective bids for promotion, the Stags will be rising from League Two after winning automatic promotion alongside Stockport County and Wrexham.

Now, it is claimed all five sides have set their sights on out-of-contract striker Louis Appere.

The 25-year-old’s deal with Northampton Town expires this summer, and while the Cobblers have confirmed that the Scot has been offered fresh terms, he has yet to sign, meaning he could move on for free.

Reporter Graeme Bailey states Town are set to lose him this summer, with Lincoln City, Blackpool, Mansfield Town, Barnsley, and Stevenage all expressing interest.

Appere notched six goals and two assists in 41 games this season, mainly acting as a backup. Overall, he’s notched 18 goals and 13 assists in 106 games for Northampton since joining from Dundee United in January 2022.

On the move?

Appere’s goal record might not be the most eye-catching, but as a hard-working attacker with good physical attributes, he’s always going to be of use at the League One level.

On a free transfer, he could prove to be a shrewd signing for any of Lincoln City, Blackpool, Mansfield Town, Barnsley, or Stevenage as they line up potential free transfer additions. Appere could be among the standout bargains on the market this summer if he turns down Northampton Town’s new deal offer.

He’s a good age at 25 as well. If he can find the conviction and goal-scoring instincts in front of goal that he’s sometimes lacked, he could become a really dangerous striker in League One.

Ultimately, the ball is in his court. He can opt to stay with the Cobblers, or he can try his luck as a free agent and explore the options available to him this summer.

Northampton Town’s striker options

If Appere does decide to move on, Jon Brady may oversee a bit of a makeover of his striker department at Northampton Town.

The loans of Kieron Bowie and Tyreece Simpson will be coming to an end, and Danny Hylton is moving on at the end of his contract. If Appere heads out the exit door, that will leave no natural senior strikers on the books at Sixfields.

For that reason, they’ll be hoping Appere can stay. It can be tough finding one or two strikers in the transfer window, but more than that will pose a real challenge for the club this summer.
