Jayden Daniels Officially Named Starting QB for Washington Commanders

In a move that seemed inevitable to many, Jayden Daniels has officially been named the starting quarterback for the Washington Commanders. The announcement confirms what many anticipated when the team selected Daniels with the second overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft. Coach Dan Quinn had previously indicated he wanted the rookie to earn his place, and with the preseason coming to a close, it is now clear that Daniels is ready to lead the team. He will make his debut as the starting QB when the Commanders face off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their season opener.

Daniels showcased his potential during the preseason, starting in both games the Commanders played. He had a brief appearance against the Jets, where he played one drive, and then took on a more extended role with two drives against the Miami Dolphins. Despite his solid performances, Daniels will not feature in the third preseason game against the New England Patriots. That game will see Marcus Mariota, another former No. 2 overall pick, step in as the starter. Mariota has been dealing with a groin injury, which kept him out of recent games, but he is expected to return for the final preseason matchup.

The Commanders have struggled for decades to find a franchise quarterback, cycling through numerous players in the position. With the addition of Jayden Daniels, a Heisman Trophy winner from LSU, the team is hopeful that this era of uncertainty will come to an end. Daniels was one of college football’s standout performers last season, showing significant improvement and earning accolades for his play. His arrival is seen as a potential turning point for a team that has been in search of stability at quarterback.

The Commanders are undergoing a significant transformation under new ownership. Since Josh Harris and his group acquired the team from former owner Dan Snyder last July, there has been a major overhaul. The new management team, including General Manager Adam Peters and Head Coach Dan Quinn, is working to rebuild the team from the ground up. As part of this overhaul, Daniels is also working closely with new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, aiming to revitalize one of the league’s least effective offenses.

With Jayden Daniels at the helm, the Commanders are setting their sights on a new chapter. The focus now shifts to how well the rookie can perform under the bright lights of the regular season and whether he can bring the success that the franchise has long sought. The upcoming games will be crucial in determining if Daniels can live up to the high expectations and become the quarterback Washington has been waiting for.
