Heartbreaking: Brisbane Fall to North Melbourne for First Defeat of the Season

The Brisbane Lions VFL team experienced their inaugural defeat of the season, narrowly losing to North Melbourne by a single point at Arden Street Oval on Sunday afternoon.

In a gripping match, a late goal by North Melbourne sealed the Lions’ fate, despite their 21 behinds throughout the game.

Although the Lions started strong, they squandered opportunities in front of goal, amassing eight behinds in the first quarter alone.

A dominant performance in the opening quarter, particularly from Brisbane’s midfield, allowed them to secure an eight-point lead.

Jarryd Lyons stood out with an impressive 38 disposals and 11 clearances, supported by Deven Robertson and Jimmy Tunstill, who contributed 33 and 28 touches respectively, dominating North Melbourne’s midfield.

However, North Melbourne fought back strongly in the second quarter, scoring three quick goals within the first 10 minutes, altering the game’s momentum.

Despite efforts to regain control, the Lions struggled to convert opportunities into points, trailing by eight points at halftime.

Brandon Ryan showcased a notable performance, scoring his first goal for the Lions in the third quarter and adding two more in the second half.

Rucks Henry Smith and Darcy Fort provided essential support to the Lions’ midfield, with Smith also contributing a goal.

Entering the final quarter with a five-point deficit, North Melbourne surged ahead early on, scoring the first two goals.

Despite a spirited comeback from the Lions, including two goals from Ryan and one from Kalin Lane, North Melbourne managed to secure the decisive goal at the 26-minute mark, handing the Lions their first loss of the 2024 Smithy’s VFL season.

Looking ahead, Brisbane now prepares to face Geelong next week at Brighton Homes Arena on Saturday at 1:05 pm.
