Exeter City join fierce transfer battle for Premier League player

Exeter City Joins the Race to Sign Crystal Palace Goalkeeper Joe Whitworth on Loan

Exeter City has entered the competition to secure Crystal Palace goalkeeper Joe Whitworth on loan for the 2024/25 season, according to journalist Alan Nixon. The 20-year-old, who made his Premier League debut last season, is expected to spend the upcoming campaign on loan, with two other EFL clubs also expressing interest.

Whitworth’s Performance Last Season

Whitworth started the season with Crystal Palace’s U21s in the Premier League 2, making 18 appearances and recording four clean sheets. He also played twice in the EFL Trophy, averaging five saves per match. Toward the end of the season, Whitworth made his Premier League debut in a match against local rivals Brighton and later started against Arsenal. In total, he made 22 appearances across all competitions, keeping four clean sheets in his first exposure to first-team football.

Competing Clubs for Whitworth’s Loan

Exeter City is not the only club eyeing Whitworth. With loanee Viljami Sinisalo departing, Exeter needs a new number one goalkeeper for the next season. However, they face competition from Shrewsbury Town, another League One side looking to sign two new goalkeepers this summer. Additionally, Grant McCann’s Doncaster Rovers have joined the race following confirmation that their loan star Thimothee Lo-Tutala will not return next season.

Is Exeter a Good Fit for Whitworth?

Exeter City has a strong track record of developing young talent, both loanees and academy graduates. Notable players like Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa), Matt Grimes (Swansea), and Jay Stansfield (Fulham) have all thrived at Exeter. Whitworth would likely become Exeter’s first-choice goalkeeper for the upcoming season, ensuring him ample first-team experience, which is crucial for his development at this stage of his career.

Given Exeter’s history and need for a new number one, the club appears to be an excellent fit for Whitworth, offering him the opportunity to gain valuable playing time and continue his growth as a professional footballer.
