Done Deal: Lions Sign Exciting Trio in Mid-season Draft.

The Brisbane Lions enhanced their roster during the 2024 Mid-Season Rookie Draft by bringing in three new talents on Wednesday night. Opting for versatility, the Lions used three out of their four picks to draft hybrid forward Will McLachlan, rebound defender Luke Beecken, and small forward Darcy Craven.

Brisbane Lions National Recruiting Manager Stephen Conole expressed the Club’s satisfaction with the new recruits.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Will, Luke, and Darcy to the Brisbane Lions and are eager to see their potential in our AFL environment,” Conole said. “These players offer us more options and flexibility across various positions, and all have the potential to contribute significantly.”

The Lions’ first pick was McLachlan, a 19-year-old from the Geelong Falcons, who was overlooked in last year’s National Draft. McLachlan, a dynamic forward, has made a strong impression in the Coates Talent League as the leading goalkicker, noted for his overhead marking skills.

“Will’s speed and finishing skills are a valuable addition,” Conole said. “His dedication to improving his game after missing last year’s draft has been remarkable.” With their next pick, the Lions fortified their defense by selecting Beecken, a seasoned defender from SANFL’s Woodville West Torrens.

Beecken, who has over 50 SANFL games and a premiership under his belt, is recognized for his speed and ball handling across halfback. “Luke’s balanced defense and ball use make him one of the top players in the SANFL,” Conole said. “He offers run and ball use from the back half, giving us another defensive option.”

Concluding a successful draft night, the Lions chose Craven from the East Perth Football Club. Craven, a swift and elusive small forward, is known for his potent left foot and scoring versatility. “Darcy, from the South West region of WA via East Perth FC, has added depth to our team,” Conole said. “His speed and kicking skills bring a new dimension to our forward line.”

The Brisbane Lions passed on their fourth pick of the night.
