Derby County have confirmed the appointment of Paul Warne as their new head coach.

A deal was agreed with Rotherham United for Warne in the last 24 hours and he will replace Liam Rosenior, who was told he was no longer interim boss by the board on Tuesday night.

Warne, who has signed a contract until 2026, will also be joined by key members of his Millers backroom staff with Richie Barker moving to become his assistant, while Matt Hamshaw and Andy Warrington are first-team and goalkeeping coach respectively.

Warne is understood to be relishing the opportunity of trying to lead the Rams back to the Championship under new owner David Clowes. The move comes at a good time for Derby who are currently on an international break with the league campaign set to resume at Cambridge on October 1.

That will give Warne time to introduce himself to the squad and allow him some time on the training pitch before overseeing his first game in charge at the Abbey Stadium.

His switch to Pride Park ends a six-year association with the Millers for Warne whose stock has risen considerably in the Football League as a result of his success.

Last season he led them to the Championship and the EFL Trophy having won promotion three times from League One during his time at the New York Stadium. His track record was pivotal to Derby’s decision to appoint him and he inherits a squad that has enjoyed a strong start to the League One season.

Derby moved up to seventh in the League One table at the weekend after Rosenior guided them to a 2-1 win over Wycombe, their sixth win out of seven at home this season. One of Warne’s major tasks, however, is improving the club’s away form.

They are currently without a goal and a win on the road this season with Derby having won just three of their last 36 away games in the league. Rosenior, who did a fine job after being handed the job on an interim basis in the summer, currently remains on the staff at Pride Park.
