DEAL: Lakers deal for big name via trade

Even though the Los Angeles Lakers were unable to complete a significant in-season trade this year, they are still making an effort to start something this offseason.

The Lakers are still “third star-hunting,” according to Jovan Buha of The Athletic, and they are already considering possible offseason acquisitions. The “most realistic” option, according to Buha, is guard Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks. He also mentioned that the Lakers would probably have to give up Austin Reaves in such a trade.

It’s interesting to note that the Lakers attempted to sign another Hawks guard earlier this year, but their efforts were unsuccessful. However, young people might be more likely to be moved in the future. Even with Young in the lineup, the Hawks haven’t left much of an impression, which has some wondering if the star guard will be traded this offseason.
In any case, Young wouldn’t be cheap for the Lakers. Apart from the players and draft picks they would have to part with to acquire him, he inked a five-year, $215 million maximum contract in 2021, which is good through at least 2025–2026.

Young is still putting up huge numbers this season, averaging 26.4 points per contest. The Lakers would benefit from his long-range shooting ability, but it is unclear how they would function with another ball-dominant player in the mix.
