Darren Ferguson, the manager of Peterborough United, supports Jed Steer’s choice to return from a “poor decision” and emphasizes the necessity to remove Nicholas Bilokapic “out of the firing.”

Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson on the need to take Nicholas Bilokapic 'out of the firing line' and backing Jed Steer to bounce back from 'poor decision'

Following Nicholas Bilokapic’s horror performance at Wycombe, where Ferguson conceded he was to blame for all three of the second-half goals in the 5-2 loss, the Posh manager decided to bring Jed Steer back into the starting lineup.

Prior to Bilokapic’s injury comeback against Wigan earlier this month and his own surprise U-turn on Deadline Day when he signed a contract to stay until the end of the season after it had previously been announced he would leave the club, Steer had participated in the previous four league games, winning three and drawing one.

The Seasiders won 2-1 late at the Weston Homes Stadium, extending the Posh losing streak to four games despite Steer’s comeback. The game was decided by a penalty given to Blackpool in the second half after Kyle Joseph was challenged by Steer after he had run all the way to the edge of his territory.

After making what he called a “poor decision,” Ferguson decided to support his goalkeeper. He also explained his reasoning for changing the goal in the first place.

Ferguson declared: “It was a poor move from Jed because his foul was clearly right on the boundary of the area.” Right now, that’s crucial—the decision-making in both boxes is inadequate. He’s almost beyond the box, but I haven’t seen it back.

Nick had to be removed off the firing line by me. We are aware of Jed’s situation, but Nick is still a young child, so I feel compelled to shield him from some of the criticism he has been receiving.

“Jed is an excellent and skilled goalie, and he’ll be just fine. In the initial part of the game, he wasn’t really busy. I appreciate how well-organized he is and how aggressively he plays. He made a few stops in the second half, but most of them were easy. He will be unhappy with his choice that resulted in the punishment.

Kwame Poku, who hasn’t played for Posh since mid-January, and Ephron Mason-Clark, who was sidelined by a slight knock during the Wycombe loss, were also welcomed back.

This season, Mason-Clark and Poku have scored the most goals for Posh in League One (10 and eight goals, respectively).

“It’s critical we get them back and keep them fit for the rest of the season,” Ferguson continued. That will be crucial. Poku fared well; he held up physically.

“Ephron was being tackled all over the field again, but he posed a threat at all times, especially in the first half.”
