- Petracca makes announcement from hospital bed
- Says his 2024 AFL season is now officially over
- Christian Petracca was rushed to hospital on Monday
In a severe blow to Melbourne’s hopes of making the finals, Christian Petracca has acknowledged that his AFL season is gone and disclosed the entire nature of his injuries.
The 28-year-old midfield player, who was hurt in a marking contest during the King’s Birthday loss to Collingwood, underwent surgery to repair four fractured ribs and a lacerated spleen. He is currently recovering in the hospital.
He anticipates leaving the hospital in the next few days, but he won’t be playing for the Demons again until the following year.
Petracca wrote on social media on Thursday, saying, “I’m grateful for all the love and support I’ve received these past few days.”
Even though my season may have ended, I’m thankful that I will have the chance to compete once more in 2025.
“I’ll be cooking some delicious meals in the kitchen and supporting the boys from the sidelines in the interim.”
After expressing ‘complete faith’ in their medical team’s treatment of the star midfielder’s injury, Melbourne made Petracca’s season-ending concession.
After Petracca sustained an injury at the end of the first quarter against Collingwood, the Demons faced criticism for letting him return to the pitch.
He continued to play until the end of the second term, when he was replaced. He had surgery on Monday evening.
“Christian is doing well and is progressing well with his recuperation,” stated Alan Richardson, the football manager of the Demons, in a statement.
By Thursday morning, Christian should be transferred from the intensive care unit to a general ward and released from the hospital in the upcoming days.
