‘Why can’t we?’ – Crawley Town boss looks ahead to strong League One line-up

Crawley Town manager Scott Lindsey expressed his desire to face top teams following his team’s historic win at Wembley.

The performances in the play-offs against MK Dons and Crewe showcased the quality of football Crawley had played all season. Lindsey remarked that some of the football his side displayed in the 5-1 victory over Dons in the semi-final second leg “was not of this league.”

Looking ahead to the prospect of playing in League One next season, Lindsey expressed his excitement but mentioned the need to take some time to relax and reflect on what has been a fantastic season.

He stated, “You want to play against the best, that’s what you want to have that exposure against good sides, against big clubs but I’ve not really thought about it yet, obviously we’ve only just got up so I’ll go away and reflect and have a bit of a break with my family, and then it’s down to work to make sure the recruitment’s right.”

“It’s an exciting time,” remarked Lindsey, reflecting on the anticipation surrounding the League One lineup for the upcoming season. With several big teams involved, the season is shaping up to be thrilling and unpredictable.

The 2024/25 season marks the first time Crawley will face Birmingham, Charlton, Huddersfield, Reading, or Wigan in a league fixture. Additionally, it’s only the second time they’ve been in the same division as Barnsley, Bolton, and Blackpool—all clubs with Premier League history.

Joining these established clubs will be Mansfield Town, Stockport County, and Wrexham, all promoted from League Two. The division will also include Bristol Rovers, whom Crawley defeated in the EFL Trophy this season. The nearest away trips will be to Leyton Orient and Charlton Athletic.

While some may consider Crawley favorites for relegation back to League Two, Lindsey remains optimistic. “It’s unbelievable, isn’t it? When you look at it like that, there are some big clubs in that division, and why can’t we compete? We were backed to go down this year; we will be more than likely backed to go down next year, but let’s hope we are not.”
