After winning the Super Bowl the previous season, the San Francisco 49ers are not taking their success for granted. Weeks before the 2024 NFL draft begins, San Francisco is expressing interest in a veteran wide receiver despite having one of the league’s most well-rounded rosters. The 49ers are reportedly pursuing former Cincinnati Bengals wideout Tyler Boyd in the free agent market.
There are other teams interested in Boyd’s services besides the NFC West team. The Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions, and other teams are reportedly considering Boyd as well. Following his legal troubles over the weekend, standout rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice of the Chiefs may now be the front-runners for Boyd.

Boyd, the 55th pick overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, has played for the Cincinnati Bengals for his entire eight-year professional career. He spent his first two seasons primarily as a reserve, but in 2018 he caught 76 passes for 1,028 yards and seven touchdowns. The next year, he recorded career highs of 90 receptions for 1,046 yards and five touchdowns. From 2020 to 2022, the Pittsburgh product recorded at least 58 receptions and 760 receiving yards per season.
Boyd did, however, regress in 2023, playing behind Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase, two other wide receivers. Boyd had 67 receptions at the end of the previous season, but only 667 yards and two touchdowns. He caught eight passes for 117 yards in Week 10 against the Houston Texans, which turned out to be his best performance of the 2023 season.

But nobody else had gotten more than 300 yards as a receiver. Just 400 receiving yards and one touchdown were combined by Jauan Jennings and Ray-Ray McCloud. Boyd would be a great asset to Kyle Shanahan’s offense as head coach. Boyd would probably start all games as the third receiver in a highly effective offense.
