Three players on Ipswich Town are still in danger of receiving a ban in the upcoming weeks, making them one of just three teams without a red card this season.

The surprising impact of red cards on footballers

This is due to the fact that the Blues have received more bookings than any other team in the Championship with 88 total since the season began.

Because of the complexity of the laws governing suspensions and their cutoff points, Alex Jones has evaluated the current status of play before the final stretch.

Morsy Sam

The four games that Sam Morsy has been suspended for this season are the only league games that he has yet to miss.

He received a one-game suspension following his five yellow card accumulation in the 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town at the end of September. He was then accused of “improper behaviour towards a match official” following the 2-0 victory against Middlesbrough, and as a result, he was made to miss the home goalless draw against QPR in late December.

The captain of Town was then booked for the tenth time this season during a goalless draw away at Stoke City on New Year’s Day, which kept him out of the games against Leicester City and Sunderland in January.

With more cautions than any other player in the division, he presently has 12, which puts him in a bit of a risky situation. He will be suspended for three matches if he is booked three more times before the season is out.

And if that 15 card limit was hit on matchday 44, 45 or 46 of the regular season, then there’s potential for him to miss one, two or all three play-off matches.

One’s season total is not affected by yellow cards acquired during the playoffs. For instance, if Morsy was on 14 and booked during a first-leg tie, he would not be suspended for the second leg and could not travel to Wembley.

Massimo Luongo

Massimo Luongo could still receive 15 yellow cards before the season is out, just like any other player, but it’s unlikely that he will receive seven warnings in the following 12 games.

By matchday 37, the Australian needs to avoid receiving 10 bookings, so that will be his main concern. On March 9, Ipswich will travel to Cardiff City.

He can only score one in the remaining three games because he is currently on eight for the campaign.

This weekend, the Blues go to Plymouth Argyle, and on Tuesday, they host Bristol City. He should be good for the remainder of the season if he can complete 90 minutes in South Wales with nine cards or less.

Lewis Travis

Interestingly enough, since joining Ipswich in January, Lewis Travis has only been shown one yellow card. His season total now stands at eight goals, and that came in the 1-1 draw away at Leicester.

That’s because he picked up seven bookings in 20 games for Blackburn Rovers in the first half of the season, leaving him in the same position as Luongo.

But since relocating to Suffolk, Travis has only made three starts and two cameo appearances. Morsy and Luongo look to be the first-choice partnership, and Jack Taylor can’t be a million miles away from returning to action following a quad injury, meaning that the 26-year-old shouldn’t have any issues in avoiding two bookings by the end of Cardiff away.

Other players

Barring a total disaster, nobody else is at risk of accumulating too many yellow cards.

Harry Clarke and Wes Burns are both on six, while Brandon Williams, Conor Chaplin and Luke Woolfenden all have five. None of them can reach 10 bookings before the cut-off point, and it would take a total disciplinary collapse for any of them to reach 15 before the end of the season.

It looks like Morsy, Luongo and Travis are the only three at risk going into the final few weeks.
