‘Adjustments’: Journalist shares worrying Danny Rohl compensation insight amid Sheffield Wednesday contract talks

Sheffield Wednesday are currently negotiating a new contract with their impressive manager, Danny Rohl.

Talks with Rohl have been ongoing since the end of the 2023/24 season.

Owner Dejphon Chansiri is keen to secure Rohl’s future at Hillsborough, with discussions reportedly progressing well.

This follows Rohl leading the Owls to a 20th place finish in the 2023/24 Championship, which has attracted interest from Hull City and Sunderland.

The latest update on Rohl’s contract is that he and Chansiri met in London to further discuss the new deal, and these talks are believed to be close to concluding.

However, a new contract for Rohl will require ‘adjustments’ to his current compensation package in S6.

Danny Rohl’s Compensation at Sheffield Wednesday

It has recently been disclosed that any club wanting to hire Danny Rohl away from Sheffield Wednesday would need to pay £5 million.

If a club aims to take Rohl along with his backroom team, they would need to double that amount, paying Sheffield Wednesday £10 million in compensation.

Rohl’s current contract runs until the end of the 2024/25 season, but a new deal would include ‘adjustments’ to his current compensation clause.

Speaking on Football Heaven, BBC journalist Rob Staton revealed, “Wednesday are trying to agree a long-term contract with their manager.”

Staton added, “If it is done, which would be good news for all concerned, this would include adjustments to compensation.”

Sheffield Wednesday Need to Strike a Balance in Danny Rohl’s Contract

A fee of £5 million for Danny Rohl, or £10 million for Rohl and his backroom team, would provide a substantial financial boost for owner Dejphon Chansiri if they were to leave.

This windfall could be strategically used to find another talented manager like Rohl and reinforce the backroom staff, as well as to invest in new players during the transfer market.

Currently, the £5 million clause appears to have discouraged teams from attempting to sign Rohl this summer.

However, if this fee were to be significantly reduced, the likelihood of other clubs trying to poach Rohl from Sheffield Wednesday would increase substantially.

Therefore, Chansiri and the club need to find a balance; while extending Rohl’s contract remains the primary objective, they must also ensure the terms do not make it too easy for rival clubs to lure him away.

On the other hand, Rohl might be hesitant to commit long-term if he feels the hefty compensation clause would trap him at Hillsborough should circumstances deteriorate.
