“500k-600k” – Pundit backs Charlton Athletic to seal “shrewd” Coventry City deal

Carlton Palmer believes Matty Godden and Charlton Athletic could be a fantastic fit, with the Addicks said to be keen on the Coventry City striker.

It’s been reported that Charlton Athletic is eyeing Coventry City’s Matty Godden as manager Nathan Jones seeks to reinforce his forward line in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Since his arrival from Peterborough United in 2019, Godden has played a significant role in Coventry City’s journey, particularly during their rise in the past five years, which included a promotion from League One. While featuring regularly under manager Mark Robins, Godden has contributed to the Sky Blues’ establishment in the Championship.

However, this season, Godden has made 34 league appearances, scoring six goals, with most of his contributions coming from the bench. Coventry narrowly missed out on the playoffs, but they did enjoy a memorable FA Cup run that ended in a dramatic semi-final defeat to Manchester United.

Due to the outstanding form of Ellis Simms and Haji Wright, Godden has found himself predominantly used as a substitute in recent months. With the experienced forward entering the final year of his contract this summer, speculation about his departure in the transfer window has surfaced.

According to South London Press reporter Rich Cawley, Charlton is showing interest in Godden as Jones aims to bolster his squad ahead of his first full season in charge of the League One club.

However, Godden’s availability remains uncertain, given his contractual situation, but it’s anticipated that there will be significant interest in him from other League One clubs if he becomes available for a transfer.

Former England international Carlton Palmer is confident that Charlton Athletic will significantly improve in League One next season and anticipates Matty Godden to be a valuable attacking addition if the club decides to pursue his signature this summer.

In an exclusive interview with Football League World, Palmer highlighted Charlton’s recent stability under new ownership and manager Nathan Jones, particularly noting their impressive run of form towards the end of the season. With Jones at the helm, Charlton aims to strengthen their squad and mount a challenge for promotion, potentially targeting a playoff spot or even automatic promotion.

Palmer identified Matty Godden as a potential target for Charlton, emphasizing his professionalism and goal-scoring ability, qualities that have been praised by Coventry City manager Mark Robins. With just one year left on his contract, Palmer believes it could be the right time for Godden to seek a move.

Despite limited game time this season, Palmer believes Coventry City would not stand in Godden’s way if Charlton presents a suitable offer. Given Godden’s age of 32, Palmer anticipates a transfer fee in the range of £500k-£600k, considering his proven track record of scoring goals in League One.

Palmer sees Godden as a shrewd acquisition for Charlton, capable of reaching double figures or even as many as 19 or 20 goals in a season. He emphasizes the importance of Charlton’s recruitment being precise and believes that with the addition of an experienced player like Godden, Charlton could be contenders at the top end of League One next season.

Overall, Palmer views Godden as a valuable asset and a seasoned professional who could contribute significantly to Charlton’s success.

It would come as quite a surprise if Charlton were not in a significantly stronger position next season, largely attributed to the impact of Jones and the noticeable improvement in the team since his appointment.

Under Jones’s guidance, Charlton appears more organized and reliable as a unit. The addition of Godden would further bolster their attacking prowess, particularly considering they already boast League One’s top scorer in Alfie May. Together, Godden and May could form a formidable striking partnership in the third tier next season.

Godden brings not only goalscoring ability but also exceptional playmaking skills, capable of creating opportunities for his strike partner. He has the versatility to drop deeper and link up play effectively, allowing May to thrive by exploiting space behind the defense and capitalizing on scoring chances. As a duo, they could pose a significant threat to opposition defenses.
