Spurs are reportedly interested in Ben Johnson, according to a Football Transfers report. The versatile 24-year-old defender’s West Ham United deal is approaching its last six months. If Bosman decides to leave the East London club as a free agent, Tottenham will be able to complete a move.
Ben Johnson: who is he?
During his time at West Ham United, Ben Johnson has proven to be a reliable backup option for the East London team. The Englishman, who was born in London, spent his early years as a player with West Ham United before leaving the team’s development level over six years ago.
He started out as a winger but as his young career developed, he switched to a full-back position. Since making his West Ham first-team debut in February 2019, the 24-year-old has served as the team’s backup. This season, Johnson has only managed 731 minutes of playing time in 16 outings, which is also the case.
The English full-back, who is nearing the end of his West Ham United contract, is probably ready for a fresh challenge. A number of prominent teams, notably Tottenham Hotspur, have taken notice of this scenario.
Tottenham Is Inquiring
It’s interesting to note that Ben Johnson is related to Ledley King, a Tottenham icon who captained the North London team for a number of years. Tottenham could still pursue the 24-year-old Englishman despite Ange Postecoglou’s roster having two right-backs.
Spurs are reportedly interested in a number of full-backs, including Ferdi Kadioglu. They also tried and failed in January to get Andrea Cambiaso. Emerson Royal, meanwhile, may not have much longer at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Saudi Pro League teams expressed interest in him in January.
Johnson is therefore a potential addition to Tottenham, and his approaching freedom to choose makes him a compelling choice. Tottenham may recruit a new player for nothing and use the money for other objectives. It will be intriguing to observe, though, if the 24-year-old wishes to move from one backup position to another.
