Jays Blow Out The White Sox as José Berríos….

White Sox 3 Blue Jays 9

Words I didn’t expect to type this year: The Jays scored 9 runs. Nine.

José Berríos wasn’t at his best, but he managed to get through 6 innings, giving up 8 hits, 3 earned runs, and 2 walks while striking out 6.

His velocity was down compared to most of his starts this season, and his pitches lacked their usual sharpness. Nevertheless, it was another quality start for him, his 8th in 10 outings, which is very impressive.

He encountered some difficulties in the seventh inning, including a home run by Paul DeJong (who matched his total hits with the Blue Jays in just this game, with 3).

In the seventh, Yimi Garcia entered with a runner on first and quickly retired three batters, including two strikeouts.

Génesis Cabrera issued two walks in the eighth but managed to escape without allowing a run (his control issues prompted the Jays to get Jordan Romano warming up).

Erik Swanson pitched a scoreless ninth, surrendering a single but benefiting from a couple of nice catches in the outfield. Kevin Kiermaier’s sliding catch to end the game was particularly impressive.

Offensively, we had 12 hits, including two home runs:

Bo Bichette, after three hitless games, recorded 4 hits, 3 doubles, and an RBI.
Danny Jansen had 2 hits, a home run, and a double, with 5 RBI. Batting second seems to suit him well.
Vladimir Guerrero went 1 for 3, with 2 walks and an RBI.
Daulton Varsho had 2 hits, a home run, and 2 RBI.

On the downside, Justin Turner (now 0 for his last 29 at-bats), George Springer, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa all went hitless.

Jays of the Day: Varsho (.178 WPA), Bichette (.156), Jansen (.134), and Garcia (.129).

Other Award: Springer (-.100).

There was also a slick 2-4-2 caught stealing at home plate. With Korey Lee on third, Nicky Lopez attempted to steal second. When Jansen threw to second, Lee broke for home. Davis Schneider’s throw back to Jansen was perfect, allowing him to apply the tag on Lee.

Tomorrow, Garrett Crochet (4-4, 4.18) faces Yusei Kikuchi (2-3, 2.60).
