The Texas Rangers seem prepared to begin defending their championship.
The Rangers and free agency pitcher Michael Lorenzen have reached an agreement, according to a late-night report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic on Wednesday. Lorenzen, a righty, will get a $4.5 million, one-year deal. For a maximum value of $7 million, it also includes an extra $2.5 million in incentives.
The 32-year-old Lorenzen was a Detroit Tigers All-Star in the previous year. After being dealt to the Philadelphia Phillies at the trade deadline, he surprised everyone by throwing a no-hitter in August. Despite making 11 appearances for the Phillies, Lorenzen had a 5.11 ERA, which probably hurt his chances of finding a new home as a free agent this winter. Overall, his time with the Phillies was not fruitful.
The Rangers chose to wait it out and are now receiving Lorenzen at a significant discount. With Max Scherzer and a new summer pitching acquisition both expected to miss the first half of the 2024 season and Jacob deGrom still recuperating from Tommy John surgery, he could have a shot in the Texas rotation right away.
