Are the Yankees out on the top free-agent pitchers?

It doesn’t seem like the New York Yankees will be making any major splashes this offseason, but they are usually a threat to sign any of the best free agents available.

During Sunday’s spring training game, veteran Yankees analyst Jack Curry mentioned that the organization might target Jordan Montgomery or Blake Snell, the two best pitchers still available in free agency.

According to Curry, the Yankees are already beyond the luxury tax level, so it would actually cost New York more than $60 million annually to sign Snell to a contract worth about $30 million.

Curry believes the Yankees will not enter the Snell or Montgomery sweepstakes because of this.

“If you consider someone like Snell a $30M pitcher, and he can contribute to you at that level. Do you consider him a $63M pitcher?” Curry asked. “That’s a lot more difficult to swallow. So, I think in terms of improving, the Yankees are always trying to do that and they’re always looking. I don’t believe you’ll end up seeing them looking too deep into Snell and Montgomery.”

Snell has long been associated with the Yankees. It is not completely out of the question that Steinbrenner may make another significant addition, since he made clear over the weekend that he is not happy with the team’s starting lineup.

Two of agent Scott Boras’s major four unsigned clients are Snell and Montgomery. Boras is biding his time until teams give in and give his players the kind of contracts he wants.

The Yankees may still be interested in signing either pitcher, but they’ll presumably wait for the price to drop before doing so.
