One of Swansea City’s transfer plans has just got fans left with nothing to say

Leeds United’s play-off final failure will have ramifications on Swansea’s summer.

Leeds United suffered heartache at the hands of Southampton in Sunday’s Championship play-off final at Wembley – and Swansea City might well be feeling the knock-on effects.

Adam Armstrong’s early striker proved enough to hand the Saints victory and propel former Swans boss Russell Martin into the Premier League for the very first time.

In contrast, it was a tough afternoon to take for fellow Swansea alumni Daniel James, Joe Rodon, Connor Roberts and Joel Piroe, whose Leeds side will now have to go again in the Championship next term.

For Swansea, Piroe’s failure to reach the Premier League is particularly significant. Had the Dutchman helped bring top-flight football back to Elland Road, it could have banked the Swans a potentially sizeable sum this summer.

After several twists and turns, the Dutchman left Swansea for west Yorkshire last summer for a fee believed to be worth an initial £12million. As part of that deal, it’s understood there was a clause that would have seen the Swans bank around £3million in the event of promotion back to the Premier League.

Those plans have clearly now hit the buffers, in what is perhaps an early blow to Swansea’s plans. They will, however, no doubt have planned for all scenarios.

Head coach Luke Williams has already admitted that a big recruitment drive is needed this summer, with his squad in need of strengthening in almost every area heading into this transfer window.
