Mikey Johnston is a 24-year-old winger who has been associated with Celtic since 2008. Despite being with the club for many years, Johnston has faced challenges with injuries during his tenure with the senior team. As a result, he has struggled to cement a consistent place in Celtic’s starting lineup.
To gain more playing time and experience, Johnston embarked on a loan spell with Vitoria Guimaraes last season. During his time there, he managed to score one goal and provide four assists, showcasing glimpses of his potential and talent.
In the January transfer window, Johnston joined West Bromwich Albion on loan. Since then, he has been in flying form, impressing pundits and fans alike with his performances in the Championship. Carlton Palmer, a pundit, has specifically highlighted Johnston’s impact at West Brom and suggested that clubs like Sunderland might be considering him as a potential replacement for their outgoing star, Jack Clarke.
However, it’s noted that Johnston’s impressive form might come with a price tag. Given his recent performances, Celtic could potentially demand around £2 million to £3 million for his services. While Sunderland’s policy typically revolves around acquiring young players at lower costs, Johnston’s price might exceed their usual budget. Nonetheless, clubs like Norwich, who have greater financial resources, could be better positioned to afford Johnston if they decide to pursue him.
Johnston’s loan spell at West Brom has been fruitful, earning him attention from various clubs, and his future destination will likely be decided based on his continued performance and the financial capabilities of interested clubs.
He has found a lot more success at West Brom though, netting six goals and providing one assist in only nine games.
The Republic of Ireland international has been key to the Baggies’ push for promotion, and Celtic could take advantage of his impressive form by making some cash from his departure this summer.
If Johnston can keep up his form next season, then he could certainly be a very solid addition to Sunderland’s frontline.
Palmer questions whether we could afford the attacker, but £3 million certainly seems affordable if we were to make around eight-times that amount from Jack Clarke.
Of course, it would take a lot for him to fill Clarke’s boots, but our current star man wasn’t all that when he joined us and look what happened to him.
The Black Cats could certainly face a lot of competition though, and he could well favour a permanent move to West Brom.
As long as we do actually pursue a replacement for Jack Clarke though, rather than just slotting Romaine Mundle into the left side and hoping nobody notices the difference.
