Taylor’s contract with Wearside expires this summer, and he was informed before the end of the season that it would not be renewed.
The 21-year-old continued to play for Sunderland’s under-21s in the Premier League 2 knockout rounds, scoring a thrilling equaliser against West Ham in the quarter-finals and a stunning hat-trick against Reading in the semifinals.
The Young Black Cats were unable to take the championship, losing 3-1 against Tottenham in the final, with Taylor once again captaining the team. Taylor remarked on X after the final: “It’s been a pleasure to be a part of this club for so long.” “Nothing but respect; thank you for everything.”
Taylor started at Sunderland as an under-9s player, progressing to the first-team and making his debut in 2021. Away from football, he had to deal with the devastating death of his father last year, which followed a difficult loan spell at Hartlepool.
