Mel Reay issues update on Sunderland’s January transfer plans and explains importance of upcoming cup tie

Mel Reay said that while efforts are being made to bolster the Sunderland roster for the January transfer window, significant changes are not anticipated during that time.

With ten games remaining in the Championship, Sunderland has made a great start to the season following a major revamp in the summer and is still very much in the running for the championship. Reay would like to recruit one or two players if it is feasible, mostly because Keira Ramshaw had to be forced to quit early this season due to injury.

“As I mentioned before Christmas, I would like to try to add some more competitiveness to the team by bringing one in at least. Right now, I have no control over it, so we’ll have to wait and see.”

After their winter break, Sunderland will play Southampton in the FA Cup fourth round at Eppleton on Sunday (1pm KO). The winner will receive a prize of £54,000.

Reay praised the FA Cup, saying, “It’s huge, especially with the rewards now financially on offer.”

“It’s critical that we make every effort to advance in the competition.

“I believe it’s become even more significant. Smaller clubs can be sustained for many years to come, especially by some of the remaining teams that have been in the competition since the beginning. That’s big for the game. All we want to do is strive to get as far as we can.

“We’ve already faced Southampton this season, so it’s undoubtedly going to be a challenging match. Although we performed admirably at St. Mary’s, we know that this will be a challenging draw. It will probably be close because they have several

pretty strong players, and the match when we went down there was difficult. However, I believe we’ve shown everyone that we can compete on our own and that we’re a really well-organized team that can take on any team on our day. It was a close game; we had opportunities, and we took advantage of them to win three points.”
