3 Anthony Patterson replacements Sunderland must eye amid Liverpool links

Anthony Patterson, the goalkeeper for Sunderland, has been linked to a significant transfer to Liverpool.

Sunderland’s loss against Ipswich Town over the weekend caused them to drop out of the top six in the Championship.

Wearside supporters are currently worried about the club’s direction, which hasn’t helped matters after the close loss.

This season, Patterson, 23, has participated in 27 league games for Sunderland. When the Black Cats were in League One for the 2021–2022 season, he had his breakthrough campaign.

After taking over the position, the academy graduate established himself as one of England’s finest young shot stoppers.

Patterson was a target for Liverpool, according to Alan Nixon’s report from yesterday, as they attempt to replace incumbent keeper Allison as soon as possible. He says it’s more likely to happen in the summer, but he doesn’t discount leaving in January.

Here are three substitutes that Sunderland ought to think about if Patterson were to move out of the northeast.

Griffiths, Josh

The 22-year-old keeper isn’t playing much right now for West Brom.

The young Englishman was at Portsmouth prior to his 10 Championship games and four clean sheets during the previous season.

Although he may not have participated in as many championship games as some supporters would have preferred, Patterson had no experience playing senior football outside of the National League prior to being given the opportunity to play in League One with Sunderland.

Ilic Veljko

The 20-year-old Serbian goalie now plays for FK TSC in Serbia’s first flight.

His league stats are good, and he has already played football in the Champions and Europa Leagues.

In 15 games this season, the Serbian international at U21 level had ten clean sheets. The previous time, he made 13 appearances in 28 games and had already accrued a significant amount of senior minutes.

Though he clearly lacks experience at a level as high as the Championship, he does match the current target type of player that Sunderland looks for.

Daniel Iversen

Iversen only transferred to Stoke City on loan this month, so this option wouldn’t be available until the summer. However, as Liverpool is more likely to make a move in the summer, Iversen is on this list.

Given how well Leicester City is doing, it appears like he might not receive a shot in the Foxes’ senior squad. In light of this, moving permanently in the summer could be the wisest course of action for his career.

He has a ton of championship experience, and playing at a higher level in the future is definitely possible.
