Report: He wishes to depart this month, and Sunderland can now loan out the seldom-seen forward.

Sunderland weighing up January loan options for Costa Rica winger Jewison Bennette - Chronicle Live

It’s possible that Sunderland will consent to their first exit of the January transfer window.

Despite intense pressure to add players to fill positions like left-back, midfield, and up forward, Sunderland has not signed any players this month.

Even though some of their best talents, like Dan Neil, Jack Clarke, and Anthony Patterson, have drawn a lot of interest, they have so far been able to retain all of their players on Wearside.

Although it is undoubtedly a relief, Sunderland might be more willing to give some of their bench players the opportunity to leave the squad in search of regular first team playing time.

Jewison Bennette is the first player who may be leaving, as Sunderland Nation has reported that Hibernian, a Scottish team, is interested in taking him on a loan.

After moving to the club from his home country of Costa Rica in 2022, Jewison Bennette immediately made an impression. He made 15 appearances in his first Championship season and scored a spectacular equalizer against Watford.

He has only made one appearance in the second tier after falling farther down the hierarchy at the Stadium of Light.

Bennette has only played nine minutes in the Championship, however he has been on the bench nine times and started the August Carabao Cup loss against Crewe Alexandra.

Although the teenager failed to get much attention in January, he might now be headed to Scotland in order to play some minutes for the rest of the campaign. It’s believed that Sunderland would prefer that he remain in the UK in order for him to settle down more and keep getting better at English.

Is Jewison Bennette’s future at Sunderland secured?

During the beginning of his Sunflower career, Jewison Bennette showed flashes of true brilliance, but he hasn’t really shown any signs of growth since.

The winger doesn’t seem like he belongs in the Championship, but it’s undeniable that he needs to take a break to see how much more growth he can achieve.

Though I can see why you would want to keep him in the UK, I would be shocked if he could make Scotland his permanent home. Bennette doesn’t seem suited for the hard, muscular football we play in the north, where the temperatures will be much lower.

But if we don’t let him go this month, I can see him wanting to go abroad permanently quite soon. He won’t be a first team regular anytime soon, in my opinion, and Sunderland will only keep adding attackers to try and force him out of the team.

Bennette might be a guy we cut losses on over the next years, but we can try to persuade him to sign a few good loan deals to increase his price tag.
