As the Championship season gains momentum, Sunderland aims for another playoff berth under Michael Beale’s leadership, currently just one point shy of the top six.

The team is on course to meet their goals, having secured seven points from their last nine games as they prepare to visit Huddersfield on Wednesday night.

Their recent 3-1 comeback win against Plymouth showcased impressive performances and goals, demonstrating the players’ readiness for challenges ahead.

However, maintaining this momentum hinges significantly on player availability. Beale has provided updates on injuries, but the risk of suspensions could further thin their squad.

Three Sunderland players are at risk of suspension due to accumulating too many yellow cards. In the Championship, players cannot exceed ten yellow cards until after 37 matches. Currently, three Black Cats players are nearing this limit.

One player already served a suspension earlier this season. Ballard received a one-game ban in November after accumulating five yellow cards. Since then, he has received an additional four, bringing his total to nine for the season, putting him at risk of a two-game ban.

The 24-year-old now faces the challenge of avoiding bookings over the next six games, starting with Wednesday’s match against Huddersfield.

Fans can take solace in the fact that Ballard received eight of his nine yellow cards before Beale’s tenure began. This suggests that he is now being cautioned less frequently, potentially averting a suspension.
